What is Pepcid?
Pepcid (famotidine) is an oral medication that belongs to a family of drugs called H2 blockers. It is used to treat conditions caused by excess acid production in the stomach such as heartburn, acid indigestion and ulcers. Pepcid is also used to prevent the formation of stomach ulcers associated with prolonged use of certain medications, such as NSAIDs, and to prevent the recurrence of ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria.
Can Pepcid Help Treat or Prevent COVID-19?
At this time, there is no evidence that Pepcid or any other H2 blocker can help in treating or preventing the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). There is ongoing research into potential treatments and some studies have suggested that these drugs may help reduce the severity of symptoms and speed up recovery from the virus. However, no clinical trials have been conducted and more data is needed to support this claim.
Benefits of Pepcid for People With COVID-19
Although there is no scientific evidence to prove that Pepcid can help prevent or treat COVID-19, some studies suggest that it may have some benefits for people with the virus.
-
Lessens Severe Symptoms: Pepcid may lessen the severity of some symptoms associated with COVID-19, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing and abdominal pain. It also helps to protect the lining of the stomach and reduce acid production, which may be beneficial for people with severe symptoms.
-
Reduces Complications: Pepcid may help to reduce the risk of complications associated with COVID-19, such as pneumonia and abdominal distension. It may also prevent the formation of blood clots, which can lead to dangerous consequences, such as stroke or heart attack.
-
Improves Immune System: Pepcid may help to improve the functioning of the immune system and can thus help the body fight the virus more effectively. It also helps to reduce inflammation, which can be beneficial for those with COVID-19.
-
Lowers High Blood Pressure: Pepcid may help to reduce high blood pressure, which may be beneficial for those with severe cases of COVID-19. It may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications.
-
Prevents Gastritis: Pepcid may help to prevent gastritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach lining caused by the virus. It may also help to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers.
Dosage and Side Effects of Pepcid
The usual adult dose of famotidine is 10 to 20 mg taken every 12 hours or 20 to 40 mg taken once daily. The dosage may be adjusted depending on the severity of symptoms.
Pepcid is generally well tolerated but may cause some side effects, including headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Some people may also experience diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, rash and blurred vision.
